Doable health goals, starting now

Life is busy, and you can only do so much, right?

True enough, but this line of thinking is exactly why many of us put off working on our nutrition, that we tell ourselves now is not the right time.

Maybe a family member is leaning on you, you have a big work project, or you have a pressing health issue (which nutrition support might well make better!). Working on nutrition may feel like a luxury you don’t have.

But here’s where we get things wrong. Our brains like to compartmentalize life into tidy boxes, such as family time, work tasks and home projects — and within each area we prioritize what fills our time.

Many of us think of nutrition as a project, but one that we decide is not urgent, one we don’t have time for, like … cleaning out the basement.

But our health is different. It cannot wait the way a basement can. Our health is right now and all of our tomorrows. It touches all other areas of life in ways large and small each day.

So what if improving nutrition wasn’t such a big undertaking?

I often hear folks say, “As soon as I (fill in the blank), I’ll be able to focus on my nutrition.” But when I ask what their health goal is, many say something like, “I want to eat better, and exercise more and cut back on alcohol.” OK, well, that’s actually three sizable goals strung together to make one gigantic goal!

And that’s a lot of pressure.

No doubt we can get to all of those goals. But for right this minute, today, we just need to get started. We do that by making a plan and kicking off some small, doable changes toward these goals.

Some changes are easy, such as drinking more water or tweaking a favorite smoothie recipe. And some are more challenging, like packing your lunch instead of grabbing fast food or going to bed earlier instead of staying up scrolling. But they are absolutely doable because of the work we do around mindset, and with the tools and support I provide you along the way.

My clients are successful because:

  • They identify their motivations, what’s possible when they feel more energized, or improve their digestion, as examples. For one person, the motivation is to hike a 14-er, and for the next it’s becoming more productive and successful at work.

  • They believe (or they lean on my belief!) that they deserve to feel good, and realize that healthy changes don’t require restrictive diets or an upheaval to their lives.

  • They undertake a series of small steps, which, over weeks and months add up to impressive and potentially life-changing improvements in digestion, sleep, mood, energy, skin health, blood sugar balance, weight and other aspects of health.

  • They surround themselves with healthy people or those who have similar health goals. This really helps with habit change!

  • They create supportive environments for healthy changes. These are small tweaks to routines, which allow them to avoid triggers for unhealthy habits.

And guess what? When you improve what and how you eat, and work on other lifestyle factors like stress and sleep, then your work, relationships and other life priorities often become more manageable. They may also feel more fulfilling. So yes, now is always the right time to start working on your health.

Ready to take your first, doable, feel-good step? I’m here for you and I can’t wait to get you started.
