Uncomfortable, on purpose
Most of us have episodes of inspiration to get healthier. We’ll decide to cut back on sugar or booze, eat more vegetables or ramp up our exercise. The list goes on.
Change is exciting, it’s full of promise and possibility — at first, anyway. But after a few weeks, reality sets in that healthy changes require us to change our habits, which feels really hard.
Our brains love predictability and ease, and they’re quick to veto new ways of doing things.
Change feels uncomfortable.
We decide that it’s too challenging to cut back on sugar. Or that now’s a bad time since it’s summer, or the holidays, or a family member’s birthday, or …
But are such changes truly difficult, or just uncomfortable?
Really think about that. Uncomfortable is often the answer.
I can help you take a new approach that makes healthy change absolutely doable.
The first step is realizing that discomfort is unavoidable in this situation.
Yep, unavoidable. If you want to make a change, usually that means you’re experiencing discomfort already. Right now.
Digestive problems, headaches, acne, aching joints, low energy, undesired weight gain or something else unpleasant or painful. Discomfort.
So then you have a decision to make. Which kind of discomfort do you want?
The temporary discomfort of creating new routines that can help you feel better and reach your goal? Or the familiar discomfort, of continuing on as you have, with the same symptoms and frustrations?
Realizing there’s discomfort on both sides of the equation can be a game changer. It’s a simple but powerful mindset shift that can really help us move forward.
So can identifying your goal motivations. Let’s say you have knee pain. Of course, no one wants pain. But if you love to hike in the mountains and knee pain is preventing you from doing that, what better motivation to cut back on inflammatory foods than the reward of hiking again?
If IBS keeps you homebound each morning, when you’d otherwise hit the gym or meet a friend for coffee, those are great motivations for getting your gut healthy.
I can help you do this.
When we work together, I’ll help you identify your roadblocks to change, whether they’re logistical, such as a busy work schedule, or habit-oriented.
I’ll provide you with the tools and education that help you connect the dots between how your body feels and your lifestyle and mindset. And I’ll guide you through simple nutrition and habit changes — especially the uncomfortable ones — to help you achieve your goals with lasting success.
