Nutrition is for everyone

The healthy habits you develop and choices you make rub off on those around you.

Recently I spoke with a high school wrestling team about nutrition. We covered some basics, and talked about fueling for sports.

I loved it, especially watching the kids’ initial disinterest – their coach made our meeting mandatory – turn into curiosity.

I work with teens but not as often as adults, and occasions like this serve as a great reminder: Nutrition is for everyone.

Not just you reading this. Not just my clients. Everyone around you (and me) — partners, kids, parents, roommates. The healthy habits we develop and choices we make rub off on others. (Especially when we create simple, nourishing meals that taste good!)

Vegetables were a tough sell with my older son as a little guy. His palate evolved through high school, but even so, preparing his own meals ranked one step above cleaning his room or paying for his own gas.

Fast forward to present. Wow, have things changed.

Now 21, he's made a huge shift. Not only does my son cook, he whips up dinners for family and friends, to the tune of perfectly-tender shrimp tacos with mango salsa or steak with chimichurri sauce. He reads cookbooks. He asked for kitchen knives last Christmas.

All those years of gentle nudging by his dad and me, and tidbits picked up from teachers, coaches, and friends, have landed.

I think about the kids on that wrestling team. My hope is that a few points we discussed hit home for them, or sparked their curiosity about new ways they can nourish their bodies, physically and mentally.

Who knows? Maybe their healthy choices will rub off on their friends. Not in a pushy, “you should do what I do” kind of way, but in the subtle realizations they can share about themselves, about how eating healthy foods is showing up in their energy, attention, mood, sleep or sports performance.

Nutrition isn't just about the food on your plate. It's about nourishment. It connects us with the people we love, often in ways we don't see coming.

Nutrition truly is for everyone. Every age and stage. Every culture. Health concerns or no.
