What’s a Grocery Tour? (and how is it helpful?)
I take many of my clients on grocery tours. It's a strong piece of the foundational work we do in my program. Even if they normally dread a grocery run, most have fun on this trip. Oh yes, and I encourage clients to bring their partner or another family member along for the ride, especially if that other person does most of the shopping or cooking.
So what’s it all about?
Grocery tours are a field trip! I get to share insights about sourcing, seasonality, selecting nutrient-dense foods, and reading ingredient labels. And I answer your questions about specific foods and food categories. (And if you need to avoid certain foods, I can show you my favorite substitutes.)
We select a store brand of your choice. We travel the perimeter to visit produce, meat, seafood, poultry, and dairy before cruising a few frozen and non-perishable aisles. Some highlights we discuss include:
• When organic is or isn’t important
• Best by and use by dates
• Pros and cons of bagged, pre-cut vegetables and fruit vs. buying them whole
• Tips for saving money
• How to tell if your favorite fruits are ripe (or almost overripe)
• Tips for buying in bulk, how best to store fresh foods, and where the deals are
• How to decipher labels: what’s marketing and what’s valuable information for your health
The grocery store is where good nutrition intentions either come to life or quietly fall apart. Knowing what to eat is one thing. Knowing how to shop for it, read the labels, stretch your budget, and actually bring it home consistently? That's where most people get stuck.
A grocery tour takes the guesswork out of it. You leave with confidence, a clearer sense of what belongs in your cart, and usually a few surprises — foods you walked past a hundred times and never thought to try.
It's one of my favorite things to do with clients, and honestly? It's just a really good time.
If you're curious about the foundational nutrition work we do together, grocery tours included, I'd love to tell you more.
